First look at Ubuntu 18.10 (Cosmic Cuttlefish) with Communitheme

Ubuntu 18.10 will be known as Cosmic Cuttlefish and daily builds are available for testing. It is expected that when Ubuntu 18.10 is officially released on October 18th it will include the community-created 'Communitheme' as the default desktop theme. I've respun a daily build ISO using my 'isorespin.sh' script and included the latest development version of 'Communitheme' together with the latest mainline kernel v4.17.

I've created three ISOs suitable for standard Intel, Intel Atom and Intel Apollo Lake devices:

  • standard
  • Atom
  • Apollo

The basic respin command is:

isorespin.sh -i cosmic-desktop-amd64.iso --command "echo 'deb http://ppa.launchpad.net/communitheme/ppa/ubuntu bionic main' > /etc/apt/sources.list.d/communitheme-ubuntu-ppa-bionic.list; DEBIAN_FRONTEND=noninteractive apt-key adv --keyserver keyserver.ubuntu.com --recv-keys DEE9D5E11727231736FD173F03D12CDECFB24D48; apt update; DEBIAN_FRONTEND=noninteractive apt install -y ubuntu-communitheme-session" --kernel v4.17

with the additional options of '--boot grub-64', '--atom' and '--apollo' for each device type respectively.

To access the 'Communitheme' from a LiveUSB you will first have to open a terminal window and set a password for the default user (enter 'sudo passwd ubuntu' followed by your chosen password) and then log out (click the 'power' icon top right and select the 'Live session user') and finally log back in having first selected the theme (by clicking on the 'gear' icon next to the green 'sign in' button).

Update: ISOs have been removed due to lack of space on hosting service.

Please donate if you find the ISOs or script useful using the following link http://goo.gl/nXWSGf.

I have an Alfawise X5 mini pc. This is the dmesg https://pastebin.com/a0rzfmZk . Can you help me fix the headphone jack audio. I have the HDMI audio working using the instructions from your site. Thanks.

Установил систему под Atom - нет звука, если быть точным, то на экране входа звук работает, после входа - он исчезает. Если выйти из системы звук снова появляется. Не подскажите как это исправить?

There are so many BIOS errors that I'd be tempted to look for a later BIOS upgrade although that in itself is risky. Otherwise try either respinning with an 'RC' kernel or progressively downgrade the kernel and see if that resolves the BIOS issues to the point you can actually see what is wrong.

Have you tried 'https://linuxiumcomau.blogspot.com/2018/03/fixing-broken-hdmi-audio-again.html'?

Is this ISO working for Z83-4 (headphone, wifi) ?

Linuxium said...

The 'Atom' ISO should work.

Unknown said...

I tried using your Atom ISO for this device: http://www.triotablets.us/tablets/windows-tablets/pro-book-10-1/ (Powered by Intel® Atom Z3735G processor) but I only get blackness on boot and it just stays like that. Secureboot is off and I’ve tried your other ISOs as well (16.04) and none of them have worked for me.

Linuxium said...

Try adding 'nomodeset' to the grub parameters before booting (use 'e' to edit and 'F10' to boot) or try respinning the ISO with an additional '-u' option to get the very latest kernel to see if this helps.

Unknown said...

I’ve tried this and I can get another installer to boot, but only in portrait mode (sideways) but cannot get the screen to rotate to landscape mode with xrandr. Also I’ve tried the latest kernel and cannot get it to boot at all even with “nomodeset”. The sideways install with nomodeset in kernel 4.15 doesn’t have working touchscreen, bluetooth, webcam, or sound; trackpad, keyboard and WiFi work, but it’s all awkward and unusable being the screen is sideways and locked out of rotation due to the nomodeset flag.

This should be fixed with the latest version (i.e. 8.2.4).

Hi!

My tablet use the file rtl8723BS_nic.bin for wireless driver. In "dmesg" it showed that the system couldn't find the file in the folder /lib/firmware/rtlwifi/

I simply coppied and renamed the rtl8723eu_nic.bin to rtl8723bs_nic.bin in the folder, rebooted and the wireless started to work.

I hope this could help somebody!

Thankx linuxium, awesome work. I'm having alot of fun with my tablet (CCE TF74W)

Linuxium said...

Or if you use the 'atom' ISO above it automatically includes 'rtl8723bs_nic.bin' in '/lib/firmware/rtlwifi/'.

trying to work out if i can install Ubuntu (or similar) on my linx12x64. the closest i could find to it is someone on a site called reddit who says he installed "mint" on his but the wifi wouldnt work (big issue for me) and a follow up post linked to your blog.... so will the atom version of this work on my linx12x64 and what are the steps to achieve that (download the iso and use rufus? or something more complicated?)

Thanks in advance as I am completley stumped lol just want to get better performance from my tablet than windows 10 will provide.

Linuxium said...

See my April posts for information on installation and ISOs are available from http://linuxminipcs.com/ - probably best to start with the 'Atom' one if stumped.

mrgreaper2004 said...

Thank you, would of thanked sooner but only just seen the reply lol
will look at april and the site :)

I tried the atom iso on linuxminipcs and your atom iso linked in the article, both hit some issues when ran as a live disc:

Critical issue:
every 30 seconds or there abouts the screen would go dead for 10 to 20 seconds. This happened even when the loading diagnostic text is showing during boot.
At first I believed it to be the screen timing out but I did a test, I loaded terminal and started typing 1 2 3 4 and so on, I got to 25 and the screen cut out. I carried on typing, the screen came back at about 41 now the text in the terminal showed ....24 25 2 40 41 (this was without the spaces, added those to make it easier to see what I mean) so at 26 the system hung until I got to 40 and then resumed.
(could this be the result of using a usb2.0 flash drive as a live cd on a tablet? would installing it fix this issue? bit loathed to try on a hunch but not really familier with live discs so if its a know issue I will try it.

High impact issues:
when loading the screen was in landscape mode (tablet with keyboard is essentially a laptop so that is perfect) once the desktop had loaded it was in portrait mode and refused to rotate itself. Funny enough the touch pad on the keyboard actually worked as though I was holding it portrait too (right was up etc)
I went to settings then display to rotate it but it said no displays were regonised. I tried xrandr -o right in terminal but nothing happened.

The wifi adapter was not detected (it is a Broadcom 802.11ac WDI SDIO adapter according to windows device manager) missing driver or not supported by linux?

low but annoying issues:
despite the hedphones being plugged in sound insisted on coming out of the speakers (not good at work lol)

Are these fixable issues? did I just do something dumb? or is it a case of linux simply will not work on my system?

The tablet is a linx 12x64 (intel(R) Atom(TM) x5-Z8350 cpu@1.44ghz if that helps

mrgreaper2004 said...

I tried Mint 19 (xfce) this loaded and worked great, no wifi and no sound but no screen cutting out with system hang every few minute.

I fixed the wifi issue using this https://forums.linuxmint.com/viewtopic.php?t=271561#p1484433
(I used bluetooth tether to my phone to download the file REALLY slowly lol)

but that sound issue....ah man...I have tried so many things (even one that updated the kernal to 4.18 that killed video playback on youtube and still did not fix the sound) eventually the sound drivers just gave up and it switched to "dummy device" (up until that it was listed as intel . something something e8000 something....its been a long day and night with little sleep)

I am about to try lubuntu, tbh I am starting to think Linux is not meant for casual users, I really want to speed up my windows tablet but I just do not feel Linux is there yet in terms of driver support.

mrgreaper2004 said...

Lubuntu worked for video again (no system hangs or freezes) but again no sound
in the volume control it comes out as atom/celeron/pentium processor x5-e80.... (I am sure on another version of linux it showed e8000) when i run a speaker test (speaker-test in terminal) I can see the bar moving as though there should be sound but hear nothing through the speakers or headphones

about to try an older version of ubuntu (16) then giving up as i need the tablet in 2 and a half hours and i really should of had more sleep before work lol (sorry for multiple replies, hoping that you may look at this and go "aha its that, heres the fix" and because it may be useful to note that the new ubuntu does not work on the linx 12x64

mrgreaper2004 said...

the older version of ubuntu had the same issue no sound, no wifi and the annoying freezes.
went to return to windows but the recovery system on the tablet has been overridden by one of the linux versions...doh, fixable i believe though from what I read it will of forgotten its license and i may need to purchase one.
Costly endeavor trying to put linux on a windows tablet both in time and money, really do not recommend this to anyone

Try respinning the latest Ubuntu ISO with the command (and downloaded links) in http://linuxiumcomau.blogspot.com/2018/04/installing-ubuntu-on-new-device-ie.html?showComment=1535514445103#c1777636528630185596

To fix your Broadcom wifi follow the recommendations under Wifi issues in http://linuxiumcomau.blogspot.com/2017/06/customizing-ubuntu-isos-documentation.html

Once you have booted post a dmesg using pastebinit or similar so I can look at the audio issue.

Hi,
I have respun the final version of Ubuntu 18.10 for my atom tablet and got the following error:

cp: error writing 'mnt/efi/boot/bootia32.efi': No space left on device
(free space of the partition is more than 10Gb)
With this error, the respun version does not boot.

When I respin the prior version Ubuntu 18.04 all is well and it works really good, wifi and sound ok.
What can be done here?
Thank you for your hard work

Linuxium said...

I need to upload a new version of the script which I'll do in the next couple of days.

jspapillon6 said...

Thank you very much

Linuxium said...

The new version (8.2.6) is now available (from the same URL as before).

jspapillon6 said...

booting is good now, but unfortunately sound is not working anymore.

Linuxium said...

I don't think that is an 'isorespin.sh' script issue.

jspapillon6 said...

you are probably right, there is a bug in pulseaudio:

Hi
When respinning lubuntu 18.04/18.10 with --atom the live environment boots fine but running sudo commands return "sudo must be owned by uid 0 and have the setuid bit set". Ubuntu works fine and sudos but won't install because the STCK1A8LFC only has 8GB of drive space. I tried with -u but for some reason its saying I'm not connected to the internet when I am.

Any ideas how to solve this?
Thank you so much

Linuxium said...

What us your host OS that you are using the 'isorespin.sh' script on?

Unknown said...

Hi
I was using lubuntu 18.10 on a desktop

Linuxium said...

You don't need to respin Lubuntu 18.10 now if you are installing on the STCK1A8LFC as all the drivers are included. Just make sure the OS is set to Ubuntu in the BIOS (F2) before starting and it should then work perfectly.

Unknown said...

Now it says it doesn't have the required 8GB of storage or 1GB of ram to install.
Are there any earlier versions of lubuntu with the drivers included?

Linuxium said...

I would boot Lubuntu 18.10 as a LiveUSB and then wipe the eMMC storage (just use 'gparted' and delete the partitions and then make one single 'ext4' partition) and then use 'efibootmgr' to wipe the NVRAM entries before rebooting and installing from scratch.

Unknown said...

It still says there is not enough drive space or memory. My stick says it has 7.1GB of space and 896M ram. The only nvram entry is the live usb stick

Linuxium said...

As per the Lubuntu release notes ... "The installer enforces a minimum of 8GB free drive space and 1GB free RAM, but these are not truly the minimum requirements. Remove the “storage” and “ram” lines from the “required” section of /etc/calamares/modules/welcome.conf before running the installer and everything will proceed like normal" so perform the edit before trying the install.

Unknown said...

It installed perfect. Thank you so much for your help. You are a legend
