Lubuntu 16.10 Beta 1 Released for Intel Compute Sticks

UpdateThis work is superseded by my 'isorespin.sh' script which can respin an official ISO suitable for use on Intel Atom devices.

There is not too much to see as it only contains a small selection of bug fixes and core application updates but there is a brand new default wallpaper.

My ISO can be downloaded and supports all Intel Compute Stick models.

Also released is an updated kernel: 4.4.0-9136. You can download my update script from and install after making it executable (enter 'chmod 755 <script>') and then running it as 'root' ('./<script>').

Once the script has finished executing GRUB will not update automatically so run 'update-grub' as 'root'. Your device will then need to be rebooted to use the new (patched) kernel.

Can the 4.7.2 kernel updates with SD card support be applied to this Lubuntu version?

Linuxium said...

Yes, and the micro SD card worked when I tested it.

Excellent and thanks for all your hard work!

Hi! I installed above linked Lubuntu 16.10 Beta 1 on intel compute stick stk2mv64cc (m5-6y57) and also updated kernel as suggested. It works but there is no HDMI sound. How can I get HDMI sound please. Thanks.

This is not an 'ISO' problem but a 'distro' issue.

To resolve enter:

sudo pulseaudio --kill
sudo apt update
sudo apt install --reinstall pulseaudio
sudo pulseaudio --start

and this should fix it.

Thanks. Ubuntu 16.04.1 works well without any issue. I am using that now.

Hi Ian,

I have a Windows 10 tablet and would like to install Linux on it. I saw your other posts where it mentioned some tablets only support 32-bit EFI.
How can I know if my tablet support only 32-bit EFI or 64/32-bit EFI?

Thank you!

Linuxium said...

Take a look at the BIOS settings on your tablet. Alternatively first try a 64-bit (amd64) Linux ISO and if unsuccessful try a 32-bit (i386) Linux ISO ... from http://releases.ubuntu.com/xenial/ for example.

The BIOS only mentioned EFI. I can't find any 32/64 kind of words there. but I will try your 2nd method. Thank you!

I tried Lubuntu 16.10-beta and 16.04 (both linuxium) to installing and wi-fi not connecting to WPA2-AES network (the SSID is appears in list). I'm also tried to install Ubuntu 16.04 (linuxium) but the installer also can't join to network. The device is STCK1A8LFC.

What if I decided to install Elementary OS or any distro other than Lubuntu? How would I fix the WiFi and everything you patched on this?

Linuxium said...

I've not tried Elementary OS.

I use WPA2. From Ubuntu experience in general, after setting up the wireless connection through network manager gui to a hidden wifi I always use 'nmcli' to connect.

Hi I booted yesterday this image as usb-live.
I connected to the Internet with built-in wifi (WPA/WPA2) and played a video on Youtube in Firefox. There was audio and it played smoothly, but after 3 minutes everything got frozen and I powered the device off.

While reading posts/articles regarding linuxium I thought this freeze problem got solved, hasn't it?

Can I provide you any logs (if available) to solve it?

Linuxium said...

The kernel has all the known patches to reduce the possibility of freezes occurring however you can also manually add 'intel_idle.max_cstate=1' to the boot command line and use F10 to boot if you are still experiencing freezes.

I hate to ask but can someone point me to the current download links for the most recent Lubuntu ISO you've built for the STCK1A8LFC model? Thanks in advance!
